      After working from home for more than 16 years, I have developed some habits and rituals that help me keep my life in balance. Maintaining work-life balance can be challenging when you commute to and from the office each day, but it can be just as challenging when your "commute" is just a trip down the hallway or a flight of stairs.

      When adapting to working from home, it is important to find ways to separate your workday from your personal life, so work does not become all-consuming.

      For me, my feet tell me when I'm working — or, more accurately, my footwear. Let me explain. Putting on shoes signals the start of my workday, regardless of whether I plan to leave the house. When I enter my home office wearing shoes, it means I plan to work. When my workday ends, I reward myself with a similar ritual: I trade my shoes for slippers. This habit allows me to delineate work time and personal time.

      While wearing shoes is what works for me, here are a few other ideas to consider for maintaining work-life balance:

      • Identify a dedicated workspace such as a home office or your dining room table
      • Be flexible with your daily routine to ensure you and your family's needs are being met
      • Dress the part and you will act the part, which is equally important for your teammates and your clients to see
      • Power down your computer at the end of the workday — if you are working from a common space, put your computer away, too

      Bottom line: When working from home, identify the habits and rituals that will help you set boundaries and improve the quality of your work and personal time.
